NHS Information on Free Eye Sight Tests

Some patients are eligible for free sight tests and help towards the cost of their spectacles from the National Health Service (NHS). Such categories include people under 16 years of age and over 60 years of age, diabetics, persons over the age of 40 years with a family history of glaucoma, as well as those receiving Income Support, Family Credit or other benefits.

There are some restrictions on how often you can apply for NHS support and our staff can advise you of the limits that apply to you.

Who is entitled to a free NHS sight test?

  • Under 16’s

  • Under 19’s in full-time education

  • Over 60’s

  • Anyone on low-income support, income-based job seekers allowance, working families

  • Tax credit or disabled persons tax credit

  • People who require certain complex lenses

  • Anyone with glaucoma or diabetes

  • Over 40’s brother, sister or child of someone with glaucoma
